DO NOT do the bolded part. That is called bandwidth theft and its illegal. find what you want, right click it, save it to your computer, upload it to an image hosting site (photobucket, imageshack, tinypic) then use the direct link and paste it into your smiley section in the admin panel.

Didn't know that Kimmy, but it explains why some sites ask you not to direct link to their smileys and avatars. regards Paul. |

The real issue is that most image & webhosting servers with the free accounts they have a monthly bandwidth limit per account, so when someone links to your images it uses your allowed monthly bandwidth, and if the limit is exceeded it will cut the image off from showing until the next "reset" date. So people "request" that you not link to their images. I on the other hand, have a pro-account at photobucket and I don't have a bandwidth limit, but my account is set to private so I don't have my images available unless I post them. But the legalities are that it is not really illegal, its just frowned upon. ![]() Typo --Last edited by runawayhorses on 2008-02-14 07:16:41 --

there is a difference of using someones image from photobucket and using someones image from their personal website.

Yes, and the only difference being that Photobucket lets it be known they are picture sharing web-host and if your account is set to "public" your images may show up in someones search, and as a result they might use your link (bandwidth) for their own use. However, 'legally wise' there is no difference at all. Hot-linking or (using someones bandwidth) to place a image on a website or BLOG is not illegal. Its certainly not good practice and in no way a good thing to do for a lot of reasons, moral & technical. For a technical example, if their bandwidth is exceeded your hot-linked image will stop showing on your site too. The bandwidth issue still applies to websites also just as it does to places like Photobucket and Imageshack depending on what kind of account you have with the host. Website servers have bandwidth limitations too just like Photobucket does depending on what kind of account you have with them. Hotlinking = linking to a image or file on someone's server. Stealing = taking that image and putting it on 'your' local server. So in the interest of people doing the right thing, please don't hot-link.
